Best-Practice: What if you can't use hyperscaler technology

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is developing the European Language Grid (ELG). This is a scalable cloud platform that will provide access to hundreds of commercial and non-commercial language technologies for all European languages in a way that is easy to integrate. So far, the market for commercial language technologies has been dominated by American companies such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft. It’s no coincidence that these are the very same companies that also carve up the cloud market amongst themselves as hyperscalers.

Florian Kintzel will provide his insights into the last few years of development:

  • What technical challenges had to be faced and were overcome?
  • From IP ranges to S3 storage – a hands-on mentality and the courage to take risks and let things go wrong
  • How to build a monitoring architecture that will be accessed by hundreds of language technology providers from across Europe
